Re: the dark legacy of carlos castaneda
Tue, August 28, 2007 - 5:05 AMmaybe the best illustration of carlos' legacy is the kind of slanging going on the other thread that you so vociferously post to...
carlos was a unwitting dorkbrained channel for power?
an impeccable stalker who fooled us all?
discuss? -

Re: the dark legacy of carlos castaneda
Wed, September 5, 2007 - 12:39 AMdo you have a more specific question for me david? i seem to have perturbed you, but i can't get a handle on why in so few lines. i'm open to engaging with you on this if you want to share more of what's on your mind.

Re: the dark legacy of carlos castaneda
Wed, September 5, 2007 - 12:39 AMi also get the distinct feeling you have not read the salon article. you might consider checking it out if you haven't already. -

Re: the dark legacy of carlos castaneda
Wed, September 5, 2007 - 8:15 PMjeff....
was your feeling a judgmental thought?
you voice a few....
i did read that article...i had found it elsewhere ,earlier, by the grace of power...thank you for bringing it to my attention again.
i have been forced into a radical examination of my viewpoints caused by that, reading of lots of dune series books and becoming a father to be...
so as always...infinite power says
"you think that? then what do u make of THIS?"
so where does that leave us with what carlos wrote?
good question...
we have to make our own way...without guidance, with discernment.
thank power for that.
utterly allowing....even of stupidity...
so was carlos stupid or just supremely manipulative of our perceptions?
ps I AM not perturbed...just disappointed that you of all people would expend your energy upon derision.
do we take sides or realise that one side is as illusory as another? -

Re: the dark legacy of carlos castaneda
Thu, September 6, 2007 - 9:15 AMi do not see in black and white. i am most interested when making my derisive remarks in contributing toward not making carlos into a hero or taking sorceric models to be true. i am interested in seeing people receive the gifts of carlos' work without getting lost in its metaphors or his madness. i say these things with care for my fellow travelers. nothing in this world is all good or all bad, except in the world of children. -

Re: the dark legacy of carlos castaneda
Wed, September 19, 2007 - 11:24 AMI can understand your intention, I think.
It seems possible Carlos was a self-indulgent fucker. I'll make my own choices and not model myself on his.
I couldn't care less, honestly though, whether he was a fool. I care whether I am a ball of energy having an assemblage point. I care to move it with intention if possible. I want to see it of another and move theirs to get their report of experience.
I'm definitely seeing energy now (not that anyone should care), and I can feel it, too. I also can report the sensation of interaction with it, and I'll just leave that otherwise undefined. I'm just working on figuring out how fully my direct experience of being nondual (inner silence) fits into the framework Carlos presented. I tend to ignore his chatter and choices as much as possible and just focus on the core of what DJ set forth. Either I'm able to discover DJ is correct, or I am unable...
I am ...disappointed in Carlos and I sort of judge him for squandering what he received. On the other hand, I hope he chose what he thought was an impeccable use of power. There's little use in subjectively opining whether he was false, etc. I can only speak for myself and state that where I have employed DJ's teaching I have found ...corroboration. As in Shamanic practice, it seems the nonordinary realm does have some features which are generally perceived in a similar fashion by those who get that far.

Thu, September 20, 2007 - 11:45 PMYes, well the answer is DENIAL, of course, heh heh.
I want more, my friend. Much more.

Has anyone seen this? It's sanitized of Carlos. Just DJ. Excellent for that reason.
What others here hold the state of no internal dialog?

Mon, September 24, 2007 - 9:56 AM"What others here hold the state of no internal dialog? "
it's my feeling that this assemblage point shift actually permits you to bear witness to your internal dialog without identifying with it, not its complete eradication. do you agree? -

This is the maximum depth. Additional responses will not be threaded.
Re: the dark legacy of carlos castaneda
Tue, September 25, 2007 - 3:35 PMThank you for asking me this and the feeling of acceptance I now have. I began this response more than once before. ...and please forgive me being long winded. I'm doing my best to be clear but efficient.
My most essential response is: I can report both experiences.
I am finding that what I am now calling "source objects" (for Sourcery), are things which have facets or sides or dimensions. Whatever... Because it is so, or actual and not fantasized, it can be perceived or implemented from more than one perspective or angle, etc. The tumblers roundness and striking-ness could be (thought of as) two sides or perspectives available to the seer. I am aware of some things which have ten sides.
Again, speaking only from my personal experience I find several permutations with/for silence. I have been interacting with it for several years now.
While the initial shift of the AP allows for dialog from the observer, clearly a further shift brings that to an end. No talk is necessary for being as directly/fully as possible. Said another way, being as directly as possible means (it is necessary for) no dialog. For clarity around this we refer here to the inner critic and one who tells us we are what we are and reinforces the consensus BS. eg - the label of each item we see in ordinary reality may come into our audio track, on bla bla bla...
There is an objective and experiential silence. That is two.
Observe silence.
Be silence.
My experience can be:
Silent, with the river of thought only observed. To my knowledge, this is beginning Second Attention. With the river of thought yet flowing, one is not fully present to the experience of being one with what is so. (wow, I now realize what is, and what is so are not the same! What is, changes, what is so, doesn't.)
Silent but present. With stillness. No river of thought. My waking experience is very full as I keep/grow my attention focused on the most slim present-moment focus. Here I stretch to be as totally as possible while silent. It is like the hole of a doughnut growing larger, to me.
Silent and not present. It can be a case where no intent is established. Also, possibly a case where I have simply chosen to be the void and nothing from without may penetrate. Unless it does. Nothing may penetrate nothing. Hm, I like that... Love paradoxes!
Also, I found a little more to say about that. I will also share that I am able to essentially throw my consciousness into the void, without otherwise holding anything. When I do that, I am silent in my experience. I find my return to be an experience rather like popping back. In the past when doing this, I was able to manifest ball lightning about 30 feet away. It was ear-splitting and fantastically satisfying. I was on top of a parking structure with another person in Ann Arbor Michigan many years past. Anyway...
There is silence with stillness. There is also silence with motion.
I am able to report the phenomenological experience of oscillating silence and of others FEELING that at a distance. That happened over this last weekend at the retreat. I am excited about that astounding result.

Re: the dark legacy of carlos castaneda
Mon, May 12, 2008 - 1:58 PMIt doesn't matter because just the fact that he occupied that space challenged in every way by a world stuck on one view of reality.
For example despite the fact that alien sightings have occurred by presidents, senators, astronauts and thousands of average people from all over the world, there are still those who will define you as a kook and suggest you seek psych help if you dare claim to have seen one.
Carlos had a vision quest that took him on a journey which he and others shared with us. Those who were willing to believe in this experience and share in that vision were able to capture a part of this experience and it really doesn't matter if you believe or not. If you are a believer then you are willing to accept the journey if you are a non-believer then you can never find the path so it's perfectly natural that for you the path does not exist and thats the way it ought to be. -

Re: the dark legacy of carlos castaneda
Mon, May 12, 2008 - 6:38 PMyou'll note the basic structure of your post, how it is self-reinforcing and permits no questions. this is how faith works, it gets a hold of one's mind and disallows scrutiny, placing you on the inside of a clique.
steve, i ask a simple question: what is your method for knowing whether a belief you hold is true or not? spell it out. -

Re: the dark legacy of carlos castaneda
Mon, June 2, 2008 - 11:50 AMI think going into trying to explain everything loses the personal connection that one has with the books. If one has a personal belief structure that doesn't mean that they've put themselves into a clique. Like he said, you either believe it and take it for what works for yourself or you let it go. Such is all wisdom...
I understand that you want to see that others don't fall into the many pitfalls that others have fallen into with castaneda. However if everytime someone says they believe something about the books you have to make a counterpoint and argument I don't think that flows well with what this tribe is wanting to do...which is discussion that allows ideas to be shared.
Do you see what I'm saying? -
-
Re: the dark legacy of carlos castaneda
Mon, June 2, 2008 - 11:58 AMI also realized I never commented back on this post. When I originally read it I did find it enlightening in ways as to the overall story of Castaneda. The fact of a having a bubble burst with a teacher is a powerful thing, and a very important thing. Our beliefs stem from within us, and are our own thing. When we too easily believe what we read or what is said to us we lose our power. So knowing there is another side to it provides a more rounded perspective.
So I do think that that same idea applying to a group of people talking is important, having those with differing beliefs to break down or reinforce the others. However, that like all things, works best in balance.

Wed, June 4, 2008 - 7:04 PM"you either believe it and take it for what works for yourself or you let it go. Such is all wisdom... "
such is not wisdom... such is faith.
"However if everytime someone says they believe something about the books you have to make a counterpoint and argument I don't think that flows well with what this tribe is wanting to do...which is discussion that allows ideas to be shared. "
agreed. i have also made many more positive contributions, remember. i don't just pop balloons, i blow them up!!! i contradict when i feel that it is appropriate, not out of some contrarian adolescent impulse. i am trying to contribute positively, and sometimes that means participating in disillusionment.
